Running in the South African sun? We love the light, but protecting your skin and health is non-negotiable. Here’s how to stay sun-smart while you train — and on race day.
What’s the difference between sunblock and sunscreen?
The terms sunblock and sunscreen are often used interchangeably, but there are key differences between them:
🌞 Sunblock
- How it works: Physically blocks UV rays by sitting on top of the skin and reflecting them.
- Ingredients: Typically contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
- Protection: Broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB); starts working immediately upon application.
- Texture: Thicker, more opaque (often leaves a white cast).
- Best for: Sensitive skin, high sun exposure, or activities like swimming/hiking.
🌤️ Sunscreen
- How it works: Absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat, which is then released from the skin.
- Ingredients: Chemical filters like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate.
- Protection: Can be broad-spectrum; needs about 15–30 minutes to absorb and become effective.
- Texture: Thinner, more lightweight and transparent.
- Best for: Daily wear, under makeup, or oily/combination skin types.
☀️ Time It Right
Run early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense.
🧴 Use SPF
Apply a sweat-resistant sunscreen or sunblock (SPF 30+) to all exposed areas — including ears, nose, neck, and back of hands. Don’t forgot to apply even if there is cloud cover as UV rays can still be harmful.
🏂 Cover Up
Wear a cap or visor and lightweight, UV-protective gear. Bonus: it keeps you cooler too.
💧 Hydrate Like a Queen
Sun + sweat = fast fluid loss. Sip regularly before, during, and after your run.
👁️ Don’t Forget Sunglasses
UV-blocking lenses protect your eyes — and help prevent squinting headaches.
Sunshine is a vibe — but safety is essential. Glow responsibly.
