You’ve entered your first Totalsports Women’s Race in August this year but starting out can feel overwhelming — what gear do you really need? Here’s your beginner-friendly kit list for getting started (and staying comfortable) on your training journey.
👟 Running Shoes
Your #1 essential. Visit your nearest Totalsports store to speak to any of our Run Specialists who can assess your running or walking style & help guide you in selecting the right running shoes for your needs & your budget. Remember – Comfort > brand.

🎽 Supportive Sports Bra
Non-negotiable (more on this in Blog 5!). Think performance, not just style. Not all sports bras are made for the high-impact sport of running.

🧶 Good Socks
Much like a sports bra, not all socks are made for running. Avoid cotton. Look for moisture-wicking, cushioned socks to prevent blisters.

🪛 Comfortable Clothing
Comfortable looks different to every runner or walk but we suggest investing in lightweight, sweat-wicking tights or shorts, and a lightweight top — fitted but breathable. As the weather can be a little unpredictable in winter, add a lightweight running top or wind jacket that can be taken off once you’ve warmed up
🎧 Optional Extras
Other useful items to take on your run include a cap or visor, running watch, buff, handheld water bottle and a race belt. For your training runs you can run with your phone and headphones, but please remember that on race day, you won’t be able to run with headphones for your safety.

Start with what you have, and upgrade as you go. Running doesn’t have to break the bank — the joy is free.
