Nelson Mandela Bay is ready to rumble. This Sunday, April 19, 2026, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) will host the 21st anniversary of the ISUZU IRONMAN African Championship.
With a total prize purse of $150,000 and eight qualifying slots for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher. While some of the world’s biggest names are competing in Texas this weekend, the Gqeberha field is packed with tactical veterans and rising local stars ready to seize their moment.
The Men’s Field: Can the Local Hero Deliver?
With defending champion Magnus Ditlev absent, a new king of the African Championship will be crowned.
- Matthew Marquardt (USA): Wearing bib #1, the American medical student is the man to beat. His preparation has been nothing short of “Ironman”: he recently completed the grueling 600km Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race. If his legs have recovered from the Western Cape trails, his swim-bike dominance makes him the clear favorite.
- Jamie Riddle (ZAF): The hometown hero. After a stellar 5th place in his full-distance debut here last year, the South African Olympian is hungry for the podium. Riddle’s speed and local knowledge of the “choppy” Hobie Beach swim give him a massive psychological edge.
- Rasmus Svenningsson (SWE): A former champion (2024) who knows exactly how to win on this course. He is one of the strongest cyclists in the field and will likely be the one hunting down the leaders on the Marine Drive loops.
- Dark Horses: Keep an eye on the ultra-consistent Gregory Barnaby (ITA) and the powerhouse Pieter Heemeryck (BEL), both of whom have the engine to disrupt the favorites.
The Women’s Field: A Battle of Endurance
With the 2025 champion Anne Reischmann not returning, the women’s race is wide open, featuring a mix of European speed and Australian grit.
- Katrine Græsbøll Christensen (DEN): The top seed finished 3rd here last year and has since added an IRONMAN Kalmar title to her resume. She is the most decorated athlete in the field and the benchmark for the rest of the pack.
- Daisy Davies (GBR): The young Brit is coming off a massive breakout win at Challenge Almere 2025. She is a phenomenal swimmer and will likely lead the charge out of the water.
- Penny Slater (AUS): A gritty performer who thrives in tough conditions. Coming off a strong 4th place at 70.3 Geelong, the windy coastal conditions of Gqeberha play right into her hands.
- Ann Pabinger (AUT): The IRONMAN Chattanooga champion is a clinical runner. If she is within striking distance starting the marathon, she could pull off a late-race upset.
Course Watch: What to Expect
- The Swim (3.8km): Hobie Beach – Expect a choppy start that will test even the strongest technical swimmers over two laps.
The Bike (180km): A three-loop course along Marine Drive. While scenic, the coastal winds can be brutal, turning the flat sections into a “grind” of attrition. - The Run (42.2km): A four-loop flat marathon lined with the most passionate spectators in world triathlon. The atmosphere at the “Finish Line on the Beach” is legendary.
