As a first-time marathoner, you may be tempted to hit the ground running 24/7 to make sure you’re ready for that finish line on race day – but taking that approach is a hard no-no.

Instead, try cross-training by adding exercises to your runs to strengthen different muscle groups and help keep your body injury-free. Many runners enjoy additional cardio activities such as cycling or HIIT, but a balance of running-only cardio with strength training and recovery works best for me.

Below are my favourites. Add them to your usual running routine, mixing and matching less intense activities with more intense ones to train in a balanced, sustainable way.

Cross-training is every runner’s secret to a successful marathon, so don’t be afraid to diversify your routine as much as possible. Get curious, challenge yourself, and most importantly, have fun!
